Aircraft Wheel Bearings – Timken Taper Bearing 629 Inspection codes

For many years Timken Aerospace have provided the mass majority of the worlds aircraft wheel bearings and for good reason they retain their dominant position in this field. Identifying authentic aircraft wheel bearings (taper roller bearings) should be relatively easy because all approved Timken product undergoes a special level of inspection before it leaves the manufacturing plant. This is denoted by the 629 code which is appended to the bearing reference. Without this the bearing is not deemed flight approved and should not be used. Timken aircraft wheel bearings are also packaged in suitably robust and appropriately marked with anti forgery devices.

The specialised inspection process includes visual, X-ray crack detection and other methods which standard commercial taper bearings do not receive. When you consider the violent acceleration and heat generated when an stationary aircraft wheel touches the runway at 120 knots and then the immense amount of heat from this acceleration, spike loading plus the heat from the breaking system, you need to ensure the bearings you are fitting have undergone all the appropriate inspection requirements and are airworthy. The 629 code provides you this assurance.

The 629 code is often preceded with a “20″ hence you may see 20629 after the cup (taper outer ring) or cone (inner ring, cage and rollers) reference. The “2″ implies the precision level and the “0″ is simply a spacer character.

The permutations of cups and cones which make up a taper bearing assembly are many but to ensure you have the correct combination you can view the Commercial Aviation Timken aircraft wheel bearings FAA PMA list here.

Making Aerospace Bearing Selection Easier

$

Scenario: The sales team wins an order for several mechanical assemblies for a new customer. Promised delivery dates are somewhat close to the wire and the pressure to deliver is now immediately placed on the engineering design teams. The sales team is celebrating their win and the design team is burning the midnight oil working out how they’re going to fulfil the sales promises made.

This is not untypical with designers looking at their sales colleagues with horror. The earth has been promised and now the company has to deliver on those promises. The design office swings into action and starts to generate concepts and drawings based on mechanical know how and experience but when it comes to mechanical items they may not be so used to on a regular basis what happens?

Human nature dictates a path of least resistance no matter what the experience, especially when under intense pressure.  When it comes to bearing selection, often industrial bearing types are initially selected because technical data is readily available on or offline and there may also be a degree of previous familiarity from designers who may have come from an industrially based background.

Whilst these bearings will work perfectly on a form fit and function basis, the fact that they are not batch traceable products often gets dropped and/or overlooked. The internal geometries are not specified and do not form part of the design review. The alarm bells only ring when procurement has to place orders for prototypes whilst up against a tight deadline. The bad news lands back with the procurement office that only industrial products can be supplied in the required lead times. To have aerospace equivalents made is going to cause a major headache and potentially puts the whole project at risk.

Or will it?

Often overlooked, Spectech have key access to specific aerospace bearing manufacturers and can make the link from industrial to aerospace equivalents for metric and inch sized deep groove and angular contact ball bearings which virtually mirror their industrial counterparts dimensionally. For many years Spectech have offered this product range – industrial sizes with aerospace standards.

Their similarity with their industrial cousins ends with the nominal dimensions. From there on in the following areas can all be potentially specified:

  • Precision class
  • Radial, axial runouts
  • Ring track concentricity
  • Track finish/super finish
  • Start up and running torques
  • Lubricant options on oils and greases
  • Specialised internal radial clearances
  • Various cage and seal designs
  • Specialist material options on rings, cages, rolling elements and seals
Above all else these products are batch traceable. What’s more small minimum order quantities can be placed for as few as 10pcs on certain ranges and types. To find out more then contact Spectech for a better bearing experience

A new division specialising in products and support services for aircraft interiors is announced by the STAG Group. The established aircraft component supply and management company has introduced the new arm to its operation to focus on the specific requirements of cabin interiors. The company currently supplies its own Flitetec branded solutions and represents products from other leading aerospace manufacturers.

As part of its wider offer, the aerospace and defence supply company has supported the interiors market for over 25 years. The move to form a dedicated division comes as a result of STAG Group growth and benefits the industry by providing a complete portfolio of solutions to meet the specific needs of this sector of airline operations. Established customers include Zodiac Aerospace, The AIM Group and DIEHL Aerosystems.

Commenting on the formation of the new division, Colin Davis, Group Director for the STAG Group said:

“STAG Group business has seen significant growth in recent years and we want to continue to provide the level of customer focus that has been the backbone of our brand to meet the specific niche requirements of the cabin interiors market. The new division will give customers a one-stop service which will assist airlines in differentiating their flight experience”.

“We have expertise in the design, manufacture and maintenance of non-structural vacuum formed plastic mouldings, specifically crew / passenger seats, business class work stations, galleys, toilets, windows and panels. In addition, to provide a complete cabin interiors supply solution, we also supply latches, hinges, seatbelts, leather and composite inserts from some of the leading aerospace manufacturers.”

Alongside its own products, the other manufacturers represented by the STAG Interiors Division include: Actron Manufacturing, Crescent Manufacturing, Davies Aircraft Products, Parasol Aviation, Saint Louis Designs, Wollsdorf Leather, The Young Engineers, GAMA Engineering, S.E.L.A. and LORD Corp.

STAG Group acquisition supports advancements in aircraft interiors

$

The aircraft interiors and aerospace supply chain specialist STAG Group has acquired Bristol based Race Completions Ltd. The purchase extends the Group’s Cabin Interiors Division’s capabilities into design, manufacture and repair services for both the budget carrier and VIP cabin interiors markets. Investment from the STAG Group will support aircraft interiors development innovations that will bring new generation, lightweight products to market.

Race Completions has over 25 years’ experience in the design and supply of aircraft cabin interiors and an established client base including Agusta Westland, Icelandair, Transero and Monarch. The business combines an understanding of the aerospace market’s requirements and regulations with strong design and manufacture capability. With expertise in metal, machined / vacuum formed plastics and upholstery, products include new and refurbished cabin units including wardrobes, dividers, galleys, first aid compartments and seats. The company is certified to CAA parts 21G and 145.

Rick Crosby, former MD of Race Completions Ltd who takes the position of Unit Director, comments on the significance of joining the STAG Group:

“I am delighted that we have been acquired by the STAG Group as there is enormous synergy between the two companies and an understanding of our vision by the Group’s management. I believe there is huge opportunity to replace the phenolic composites traditionally used in cabin interiors with vacuum formed plastic units: this will not only save weight and cost, but open up new and exciting design possibilities. The STAG Group will provide the necessary investment to exploit this and other advancements for the cabin interiors industry.

“I will continue to work with the Group and develop our vision to change the way in which interiors look and operate by replacing conventional materials with well-designed vacuum formed plastic components. I think the industry has been slow in recognising the cost, weight saving and aesthetic improvements these materials can bring and, with the backing of the STAG Group, we have the opportunity to develop these solutions.”

Other manufacturers represented by the STAG Cabin Interiors Division include: LORD, Actron Manufacturing, Crescent Manufacturing, Davies Aircraft Products, Parasol Aviation, Saint Louis Designs, Wollsdorf Leather and the Young Engineers.

New lightweight lapbelt challenges conventional products

$

Aircraft Components & Equipment Supplies, part of the STAG Group Aircraft Interiors Division, will showcase a lapbelt believed to be the lightest product of its kind in the aerospace industry, at the Aircraft Interiors Exhibition in Hamburg. The belt, called the Feather Light seatbelt, is manufactured by Davis Aircraft Products and distributed in Europe by Aircraft Components & Equipment Supplies.

Using the example of a 180 seat passenger airline, such as the Airbus A320, the new seat belt achieves a total weight saving of 2.5kg over conventional alternatives through the optimisation of metallic and polymeric components. Alloy steel and aluminium alloy are used together with a moulded PPSU (polyphenylsulfone) polymer latch cover, which has the added benefit of being available in different colours or with bespoke mouldings e.g. a logo to complement company branding. The lightweight polyester webbing is also available in a wide range of colours across the colour palette.

All seatbelt and webbing materials meet the flammability requirements of FAR 25.853a. The seatbelt has been extensively tested and meets or exceeds FAA TSO-C22g requirements. The belt is suitable for use on TSO-C127a seating systems. Orders for the new seatbelt can be taken from Q3 2014.

The STAG Group (turnover circa £24m with sites in the UK, France and US) has two divisions: Spectech Supply Chain Services provides a complete aerospace and defence parts service and Aircraft Interiors focusses on design solutions for the aerospace interiors market. Aircraft Components & Equipment Supplies, Flitetec and RACE Completions are all brands within the Aircraft Interiors Division. Solutions are provided for fixed wing, helicopter, military vehicle and marine applications for an international client base in both the commercial and defence sectors.

STAG Group spearheads aero industry print innovation

$
0
0

The STAG Group is introducing a new printing process for the aerospace market set to benefit a wide range of cabin applications. With ink that can penetrate plastic substrates by up to 0.25mm and also be printed directly onto metal and fabric, the print can withstand the knocks of in-flight service and aggressive cleaning without marking, scratching or degradation. The new printing technique, which is believed to be unique, has already been adopted by Agusta Westland, Transaero and other component suppliers to the aerospace industry.

The innovative approach enables the STAG Group to print directly onto anodised metal parts, powder coated / lacquered surfaces, vacuum formed plastics and even fabrics to produce a durable and tamper proof finish. Cost effective for single or multiple item print runs, the technology can be used in a diverse range of applications from branding metal seat buckles and fabric webbing through to bespoke images on complex shaped cabin dividers. Warning messages can be printed directly onto the back of seat meal trays or wood / marble print effects can be reproduced on cabin units or dividers.

Commenting on the new approach to printing, Rick Crosby Unit Director of the business said:

“Existing print designs can be matched and, when used on vacuum formed plastic, there is no degradation in print quality where the plastic has been deep formed e.g. on corners. By printing components directly onto the substrate, a tamper proof solution is provided and there is no requirement for adhesive labels, with their associated purchase and application costs. This is a durable printing solution that has widespread appeal for the aircraft industry.”

As well as its own portfolio of products and services for aircraft interiors, the STAG Group Aircraft Interiors Division represents the following manufacturers: LORD Corp., Actron Manufacturing, Davis Aircraft Products, Parasol Aviation, Saint Louis Designs, Wollsdorf Leather, SELA Aircraft Lighting Systems, GAMA Infant Seat and The Young Engineers.
